Wills and powers of attorney for Langley clients
Langley clients meet us at our Surrey office, a short drive west, to prepare wills, powers of attorney and representation agreements. The first consultation is free.
Many Langley estates hold land rather than simply a house: an acreage in Glen Valley or the Otter District, a hobby farm, or the shop and equipment behind a family business. Dividing that between children who want different things is the hard part of the plan, and it is far easier to settle on paper now than for an executor to work out afterwards.
How we help Langley clients
- WillsDeciding who inherits, who administers your estate, and who cares for your children.
- Powers of AttorneyNaming someone you trust to handle your finances and property if you cannot.
- Representation AgreementsNaming who speaks for your health care and personal care if you cannot speak for yourself.
Courts that hear Langley matters
- Langley files are commonly heard at Surrey Provincial Court, with Supreme Court proceedings at the New Westminster Law Courts.
- Civil Resolution Tribunal (online): small claims up to $5,000 and most strata disputes.
Questions from Langley clients
My children do not all want to keep the property. What can a will do about that?
It can leave the land to the one who wants it and balance the others out of the rest of the estate, direct a sale and a division of the proceeds, or give one child an option to buy at a set price. What it cannot do is make people agree later, so the arrangement should be one that works without goodwill.
How often should a will be reviewed?
Every few years, and straight away after a marriage, separation, birth, death, a significant purchase or sale, or a move to or from another province or country.
Where should the original will be kept?
Somewhere safe, accessible and known to the executor. The location can also be filed with the BC wills registry, so that a search after death finds it.
Can these documents be prepared in one meeting?
Usually the set is prepared over two: one to take instructions and one to sign. Where something is urgent, such as surgery scheduled for the week ahead, tell us and we will work to it.
