Wills and powers of attorney for Richmond clients

Richmond clients meet us at our Surrey office, across the bridge, to prepare wills, powers of attorney and representation agreements.

Richmond estates often include a business as well as a home: shares in a private company, a commercial lease, equipment, or a property held in a company name. A will can pass the shares, but a shareholders agreement may already dictate what happens to them, and an executor who has to keep a business running needs authority written in plain terms.

How we help Richmond clients

Courts that hear Richmond matters

  • Richmond Provincial Court, 7577 Elmbridge Way: Provincial Court family matters and small claims for Richmond.
  • Vancouver Law Courts, 800 Smithe Street: Supreme Court matters, including divorce and property division.
  • Civil Resolution Tribunal (online): small claims up to $5,000 and most strata disputes.

Questions from Richmond clients

I own a small company. Can my will deal with the shares?

The shares pass under your will like any other asset, but read the shareholders agreement first. Many of them require shares to be offered to the other shareholders or bought out on a death, and that agreement governs ahead of the will. Bring it to the meeting with the rest of the paperwork.

How often should a will be reviewed?

Every few years, and straight away after a marriage, separation, birth, death, a significant purchase or sale, or a move to or from another province or country.

Where should the original will be kept?

Somewhere safe, accessible and known to the executor. The location can also be filed with the BC wills registry, so that a search after death finds it.

Can these documents be prepared in one meeting?

Usually the set is prepared over two: one to take instructions and one to sign. Where something is urgent, such as surgery scheduled for the week ahead, tell us and we will work to it.
